For the second time this season, the Mount Marty College volleyball team took a three-set sweep over the Grace University Royals, 25-19, 25-22, 25-18, Monday night at Laddie E. Cimpl Arena.
On Sept. 17 in Omaha, Neb., the Lancers defeated Grace in a five set match, 3-2, but three was the lucky number on Monday as they set the tone early for the sweep.
“They knew what they had to do. Confidence in themselves was the main thing we need to work on,” said Lancers head coach Candice Climer.
Senior Maggie Goree had a strong performance with a match high of 13 kills, to go along with 10 digs, three blocks and three aces.
Kate Lingscheit had six kills and four blocks, while Carlie Lambert had six kills and five digs. Also for MMC, Tina Rowbotham had 26 set assists and three aces and Jen Jerdee had six digs.
Mount Marty (4-10) liked using its outside hitters, while Rowbotham found a rhythm with Goree. Both teams were playing quite well until about the 12th point when Grace began making some big errors and Goree kept handing down the kills.
The Lancers seemed to want the first win a little more, and it showed as they did not make as many errors as Grace.
In the second set, the competion was a little more intense as both teams were about equal with the errors and points. Lingscheit helped her team by having a total of four blocks to try and stop Grace’s Amanda Brazda.
In the third match, Grace was throwing down the kills, but they could not stop Mount Marty’s Goree on the right side.
For MMC, Lambert also gave her hand in the game as she had three game points, but a few more errors.
Rowbotham found middle blocker Lingscheit in game three and, if it wasn’t to Lingscheit, it was to Goree.
“It was a solid match, but we struggled with attacking and executing, which would have helped us in the long run,” said Grace head coach Angie Taulborg.
Also for MMC, Kayla Ranek had 10 digs.
For Grace, Elizabeth Matychuk had eight kills, while Laura Ones had seven kills and six digs. Hannah Schnell had 26 assists.
Mount Marty opens a three-match Great Plains Athletic Conference homestand on Wednesday when it hosts Northwestern at 7 p.m.
