‘Walk A Mile In Her Shoes’

Last year, 42 men warmed all of our hearts as they marched through Ribfest in red high heels to create awareness of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, for the Yankton Women’s and Children’s Center first annual “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” Event. The impact of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault is long- lived, but so is the support provided by those who chose to take a stand. The community of Yankton should truly be proud that so many were willing to take a light hearted approach of creating awareness of a very serious issue. In some, shape or form, domestic violence or sexual assault will impact all our lives.
This year, Yankton Women’s and Children’s Center will host the second annual “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” event in conjunction with Ribfest on Sept. 19. Registration will be begin at 3 p.m. at the intersection of Third Street and Capital, with the walk beginning at 4:30 p.m. — walking down Third street from Capital to Cedar. Immediately following the walk will be an award ceremony. Prizes will be awarded: The best accessorized, Largest company or team (number of participants), Most money pledge (individual and group). The Shelter would like to extend a thank you to the following businesses for the very generous prizes they donated for this year’s “Walk” awards: Mr. Clean, Dakota Archery, Bodyworkz, Ben’s Brewing Co., Karttrax and the Waterfront.
In order to reach our goal, we are requesting that participants raise a minimum of $100. There is also a $20 registration fee, which covers the cost of a T-shirt and the use of our red high heels! Last year’s participants easily demonstrated that collecting $100 in pledges was not a difficult task. Many participants had gathered at least $100 in the first day.
We look forward to this year’s event being an even bigger success. If you know of someone who would like to participate or would like to sponsor a participant, please contact the Yankton Women’s and Children’s Center, at 605-665-4811 to register!
