This weekend features Independence Day celebrations in a number of communities, but some towns have additional reason to celebrate.

Menno Mayor Larry Tolzin said his town’s Fourth of July events will go forward as planned despite the recent storm with featured winds of 80 mph and tree damage. The mayor credited the tremendous clean-up effort, which received a boost from area communities and inmates from Mike Durfee State Prison in Springfield.

“Everything is on the docket (for the Fourth),” he said. “The park is still a mess, but we plan to use it for the Sunday service.”

Meanwhile, a tradition will continue at Springfield, marking its 40th annual Fourth of July celebration. As usual, things are hopping with the annual frog jumping competition.

Springfield residents invite others to join the fun, said City Finance Officer Candace Grassel.

“Gary Sedlacek is putting on the fireworks show, and I would put him up against anybody in the state. He is assisted by the fire department, and he does an excellent job,” she said. “It’s a very nice presentation and normally lasts about a half-hour. People park at the marina and the road by the golf course. A lot of people watch the fireworks from their boats out there.”

The following is a roundup of area celebrations.
