The organizers of Yankton’s Fourth of July fireworks show are within $500 of their fundraising goal of $8,500.
According to Bob Cappel, committee member and executive director of the Yankton Chamber of Commerce, $8,023 had been raised by July 1.
Cappel is confident the goal will be reached, if not exceeded.
“We’ve still got monies coming in every day,” he said. “People can drop off money at the Chamber (today) and Saturday. I’ve still got money to pick up from the Uncle Sam hats in the business community. ... So we should make our goal.”
Cappel said the rest of the holiday events are shaping up, as well.
“Everything is in place,” he said. “Everything is ready to go. The only factor that we don’t have any control over is the weather.”
The festivities will kick off at 6 p.m. Saturday, when the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and their auxiliaries host the annual patriotic ceremony at the amphitheater in Riverside Park.
Following the ceremony, the Pisgah Mountain String Band will begin performing at approximately 8 p.m., and continue until the fireworks begin at approximately 9:45 p.m.
Local non-profit organizations will also be selling items in a food court area near the amphitheater.
Cappel said the committee has been in contact with Premier Pyrotechnics regarding set-up for the fireworks display. This year will mark the first time that the fireworks have been fired from the top deck of the Meridian Bridge.
Law enforcement has also been consulted about security and safety issues during the show, he said.
“It’s looking good,” he said.
Donations toward the fireworks fund will be taken through Saturday.
