Brockberg No-Hitter Completes Sweep
Lakers Take Two From Vermillion
A four-inning no-hit shutout by Garrison Brockberg capped a doubleheader sweep as the Yankton Lakers took two from Vermillion in VFW Teener baseball action Monday at Riverside Field.
The Lakers won the opener 9-3 and the nightcap 10-0.
Yankton led 1-0 in the third when Vermillion made its biggest threat, as an error and a walk put two runners on with no outs. But Lakers shortstop Andrew Hummel snared a line drive, then flipped it to second for a double play, and a harmless grounder to third ended in the inning.
After the Lakers added a run in the third, Yankton center fielder Evan Schroeder made an over-the-shoulder catch in center field to help preserve the no-hitter. Yankton scored eight in the bottom of the fourth to end the game by the mercy rule.
Brockberg finished with five strikeouts, setting down two batters each in the first and fourth innings.
Offensively, Jase Likness went 3-3 and Hummel went 2-3 with a triple to lead Yankton. Schroeder also had two hits. Sam Wendte, Gunnar Lafrenz and Brockberg each had hits.
In the opener, Yankton scored four runs in the first and never looked back.
Hummel and Likness each had three hits, and Wendte doubled and singled to lead Yankton. Schroeder and Zach Benjamin added hits in the victory.
Benjamin went the distance for the win, striking out seven in the win.
