After losing to Wagner last year, Yankton/Bon Homme wasn’t about to let the Red Raiders start a winning streak against the Gazelles.

The Gazelles went out and avenged last year’s loss and beat Wagner 124.7-120.05 Tuesday night at the Summit Activities Center.

“We needed to get the ‘W’ back on our side this year,” Yankton/Bon Homme head coach Luke Youmans said. “We were disappointed with our performance last year that we didn’t end up with the win.”

“Overall, we had a really good night and I’m really happy with that,” he added.

The Gazelles had some time to prepare for this meet. They haven’t had a meet since Dec. 23, when they competed in a dual with Vermillion.

“We needed tonight really bad because there is only so much practice that you can do and we just wanted to compete,” Youmans said. “We have been beating the girls up because it’s been practice, practice and practice. We practice hard and we don’t take days off.”

Yankton and Wagner both won two events apiece. Yankton took the uneven bars and floor exercise and Wagner won the vault and balance beam. Each was decided by almost a point, except for the uneven bars, which is where the Gazelles pulled away in the competition. Yankton beat Wagner 30.0 to 25.6 on the uneven bars.

The Gazelles also got a boost from junior Jordan Leader, who hasn’t been able to compete all year because of an injury. Leader contributed right away in her first meet of the year and finished fifth in the all-around competition with a score of 30.0.

“This was a big night for her because athletic; there isn’t another girl in the gym that is as gifted as she is,” Youmans said. “She just needed a confidence booster tonight and this was that meet for her. She had a great all-around night and put it all together tonight.”

Leader placed in a tie for second in the uneven bars with a score of 7.7. She didn’t have a score under 7.0 on the night.

The Gazelles had two other athletes place in the all-around. Samantha Wampol finished third with a score of 31.3. Wampol tied for first in the floor exercise with a 8.7 and was the other person who tied with Leader for second in the uneven bars. She also finished fifth in the balance beam with a 7.15.

“Sam’s just getting stronger and we are working out the kinks in her routine,” Youmans said. “She’s young and strong. We are going to continue to add difficulty to her routine and she will improve as the year goes on.”

Yankton was lead by Cassie Schafer, who finished in first in the all-around competition with a score of 32.85, edging Wagner’s Jessica Koupal by .55. Schafer tied for first with Wampol in the floor exercise and also won the uneven bars with a score of 8.2. She finished in the top four in every event as she finished in second in the vault (8.45) and fourth in the balance beam (7.5).

“I try not to pay attention to my scores and just hope I do my best,” Schafer said. “I didn’t think tonight was one of my best nights, but I still got a good overall score, which is good for the team.”

Youmans said this was by far the best night Schafer has had this year.

“She’s just solid as a rock,” Youmans said. “She did one of the best beam routines that has been done in this gym tonight and I am disappointed she didn’t get rewarded for that in the score.”

Koupal finished in second in the all-around competition, but won two events on the night. She won the vault (8.75) and the balance beam (8.35). She also had a fourth place finish in the uneven bars (7.15).

“I did a lot better than I expected because I have been dealing with an injury,” Koupal said. “Today was a real confidence booster because it was a hard road coming back.”

Koupal was dealing with a sprained ankle all season, which she suffered during the volleyball season.

Sydney Breen was the other Red Raider to place in the all-around as she finished fourth with a score of 31.25. Her highest placing was second in the balance beam (7.95). She finished third in the vault (8.1), fourth in the floor exercise (8.1) and fifth in the uneven bars (7.1).

Wagner coach Cherie Petry said Koupal and Breen stepped up tonight.

“They were good leaders and they took charge when we needed them too,” Petry said. “Usually we are more competitive against Yankton, so we are going to work hard to get back to where we were.”

After having two weeks off since its last meet, Yankton won’t have to wait nearly as long for its next one. The Gazelles will travel to Brookings Saturday to compete in the Brookings Invitational.

Youmans said this meet gives the team confidence going into Brookings this weekend.

“Tonight gives us a glimpse of what we are capable of doing,” Youmans said. “I feel good after this meet and hopefully, we will continue to improve every week until the end of the year.”
