South Dakotans On Food Stamps Tops 67,000
SIOUX FALLS (AP) — As the number of South Dakotans out of work increases, so does the number of people on food stamps.
Observers and people using the benefit say it’s a result of the difficult economic times hitting the state.
As of Nov. 30, more than 67,000 state residents were receiving the assistance, up by more than 4,700 a year ago.
Forty percent of that increase was in Minnehaha County alone.
Hugh Grogan with the county’s human services office says the daily lines of people seeking rent, food, utility, transportation and medical help have been steady since August.
At the Sioux Falls Food Pantry, Manager Dick Baird said his agency is serving 800 to 900 clients a month these days, compared to a little more than 500 a year ago.
