Ramse, Danglers United Way Volunteers
Giving back to community is the reason Dulare Ramse is October Volunteer of the Month. He helps those who need a little extra help by making small home repairs with the CORE — program. He can also be found helping with the pancake suppers, Meals On Wheels, cookouts, fixing the quilting tables at The Center or assisting with the newsletter mailing. He will help wherever needed. His enthusiasm and positive outlook encourages others to take part.
Ramse’s experience in organizing pool tournaments was greatly appreciated when he assisted in getting one set up. He did such a super job that he organized many more. When a couple of women expressed interest in learning to play pool, he set up a class for them. He discovered that the women learned quickly and were good players.
Volunteering became second nature to Ramse upon retirement. As he and his wife toured the nation they would become Campground Hosts at various state parks. They would park their camper for two months at a time and welcome fellow campers to the various parks.
One summer they volunteered for the Black Hills Fish Hatchery giving seminars and helping in the gift shop.
Whenever they decide to remain in location for a few months they seek volunteer opportunities. When staying in Texas, they rang bells for the Salvation Army. It was a great experience for them because they witnessed many children sharing their coins with the buckets.
When asked why he volunteers, Ramse replied, “It gave me a good feeling. There are so many who cannot do for themselves. What a blessing to be able to help. It just makes me feel good!”
Making a difference — wherever he goes.
”Invaluable volunteers” is The Center’s description of Will and Shirley Dangler, the United Way’s volunteers of the month in November. They assist preparing the dining room for their special events such as pancake suppers, spaghetti feeds, Wine & Dine and New Year’s Eve events plus much more. They work together in the CORE — Chores Or Repairs for Elderly — program making home repairs for low income elderly. They have cleaned gutters, mounted storm windows, packed up a house for moving – helping out where help was needed.
They started volunteering while living in a small community that needed 4-H leaders. Their volunteering grew as their children became active in Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Webelos and Boy Scouts.
Will was the Cub Scout master for three years and later was the assistant troop leader in Boy Scouts. He also was a co-leader for a church youth group, a member of the Overton Volunteer Fire Department and EMT as well as the Overton Civil Defense Coordinator. He is currently serving on the First United Methodist Church Trustee Board and volunteers for Habitat For Humanity.
Shirley signed on with Retired & Senior Volunteer Program that has taken her many difference places to volunteer. She has volunteered at the Corp of Discovery Welcome Center Gift Shop as well as the role of Receptionist. Asking people where they lived and then counting them as they entered the Rib Fest was an interesting volunteer position. Shirley again answered the call when Rural Development had a stack of shredding to do, when Red Cross was running short of blood and needed donors to be called, when the fourth-graders attended the Avera Health Fair and Jan Johnson needed assistance with the infection control information.
Her name is on the “to call” list when Majestic Bluffs needs an additional volunteer for Bingo, RSVP needs to call their members for volunteer hours or when discarded cell phones need to be picked up at the drop off sites. Shirley is also on The Center’s Site Committee where they review the menus and assisted with the AARP tax assistance. She has scheduled volunteer hours when she takes reservations for The Center’s noon meals or completes office work or bookkeeping at the Habitat For Humanity office.
Will and Shirley Dangler are sharing their time, talents and treasures making a difference in this community. They are also making new friends, learning new skills and becoming more acquainted with organizations and agencies that add quality to all of our lives.
