Coming into Wednesday’s game against Morningside College, the top-ranked team in NAIA Division II, the Mount Marty College women’s’ basketball team knew they had to play at their own pace.

Unfortunately for the Lancers, things got out of control in a hurry, as Morningside won 73-50 at Laddie E. Cimpl Arena on Wednesday night.

The Mustangs, who are known mainly for their perimeter shooting, opened up the game looking to feed the ball into the post. Forward Brittany Williamson benefited by scoring 21 points on the night.

Williamson started the game by scoring nine of the Mustangs first 13 points. She scored four points during a 9-2 run which gave Morningside a 20-8 lead with 13:17 remaining in the first half.

For eighth-year coach Jamie Sale and his Mustangs, the early lead meant everything.

“We have always struggled on the road against Mount Marty,” Sale said. “The early lead gave us a chance to relax and get the game up to the speed we wanted to play at.”

On the other side, the Lancers had trouble adjusting to the full court ball pressure that they encountered early. This led to poor shooting and the early deficit.

“We talked about playing under control, but we couldn’t,” Lancer coach Tom Schlimgen said. “We had numerous turnovers and couldn’t knock down some of the shots we needed.”

After falling to the 12 point deficit, the Lancers cut the lead in half to 20-14 with a handful of defensive stops, however turnovers allowed the Mustangs to build the lead back up.

Williamson scored two consecutive lay-ups off of turnovers to make it 24-14. Just minutes later the Mustangs held a 34-19 lead after a 12-5 run with 4:38 left in the half.

“We had five or six stops in a row and then we turned the ball over and let them have some easy buckets,” Schlimgen said.

The Mustangs ball pressure immobilized the Lancers perimeter shooting.

“We came into the game knowing that MMC wanted to shoot the ball,” Sale said. “We just wanted to take their legs out a little bit and force them to find other shots.”

As the half wound down the Mustangs continued to build their lead. A buzzer-beating three pointer by guard Dani Gass (Sr.) marked a 9-2 Mustangs run which made the score 43-26, their biggest lead of the half.

Schlimgen tried to figure things out at the half, telling his girls that he needed to organize the offense.

“We were spread out to far and it looked like streetball,” Schlimgen said. “We tried to focus on getting good looks.”

Although the Lancers started out the second half better than the first, they still couldn’t find a way to cut down the lead. For every Lancer bucket it seemed as if Morningside was able to answer with at least 1-to-2 of their own.

With 12:57 left in the game, the Mustangs built continued to build on their lead. They earned a 52-32 after Williamson hit a baseline jumper and guard Autumn Bartell (Sr.) hit an open three pointer.

Mustangs guard Kayla Weerheim (Sr.) hit two quick three pointers and forward Roni Miller (Jr.) converted on a lay-up to make it 60-36 with 9:47 left.

The Mustangs put the game completely out of reach with a 10-2 run with just over 5:00 left. Williamson scored six consecutive points to spark the run.

Morningside’s forward play worked smoothly throughout the game. This almost came as a surprise as the Mustangs persona is their outside shooting.

“We are predominately a three-point shooting team,” Sale said. “It was nice to see our forwards play so well.”

Despite falling to an unreachable deficit, the Lancers did find way to break through the Mustangs ball pressure and get some open looks.

MMC was led by Amber Marsden, who scored 17 points, while Michelle Amundson added 10 points.

Now, all that is left for the Lancers is to move on. They face Hastings College at home on Saturday at 2 p.m.

“We have to clear our minds,” Schlimgen said. “We have another quality opponent with a completely different style.”

The same thing is true for Morningside who travels to Concordia in its next contest.
