MITCHELL — Led by senior Cassie Schafer’s fourth-place all-around performance, the Yankton-Bon Homme gymnastics team opened its season with a second-place finish at a triangular in Mitchell on Monday.
Schafer recorded a score of 31.65 in the all-around varsity division, after a 7.95 (second) in the Bars, an 8.25 (fifth) in the Floor and an 8.8 (third) in the vault.
Mitchell earned first place with a score of 135.75, while Yankton-Bon Homme (119.6) and Sioux Falls Washington (95.2) rounded out the team finishes.
“This was a great learning experience for us, to find out where things are for us,” Yankton-Bon Homme coach Luke Youmans said. “We didn’t really know what to expect, but we were pleasantly surprised with our night went.”
Also for Yankton-Bon Homme, sophomore Sam Wampol finished third in the Bars (7.75) and sixth in the Vault (8.6). Jordan Lillie finished fifth in the Beam (7.9), while Gina Althoff was fifth in the Vault (8.6).
