Phillip, Northwestern Will Play For ‘B’ Title

RAPID CITY — Following an upset of top-ranked Chester Area, Phillip advanced to face Northwestern in the Class B championship match after both schools won semifinal matches at the South Dakota State Class B Volleyball Tournament on Friday in Rapid City.

Phillip defeated Chester Area 22-25, 25-13, 25-15, 25-22, while Northwestern stayed perfect with a 25-11, 21-25, 25-14, 25-20 win over Arlington. The title match will start at 4 p.m.

In consolation action from Friday, Mt. Vernon and Kimball advanced to the championship game of the consolation side of the Class B bracket. The two teams will square off at 9 a.m. today.

Semifinals

Philip 3, Chester Area 1


RAPID CITY — Phillip upset top-ranked Chester Area 22-25, 25-13, 25-15, 25-22 to earn the school’s first state title game since 1999.

Philip’s attacking play differed from their first round win where Sierra Hook came away with the majority of the kills, instead, Friday night the Scotties attacked by committee with three players recording 10 kills apiece in Hook, Guptill, and Fitzgerald.

Philip improves to 32-3 on the season and will battle undefeated Northwestern at 3 p.m. today in the Class B state title game at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.

Northwestern 3, Arlington 1

RAPID CITY — The Northwestern Wildcats kept their perfect record intact as they advanced to the Class B state championship game topping Arlington in four games 25-11, 21-25, 25-14, 25-20.

The Wildcats were led by Jussy Tuscherer who had 19 kills and Carly Peterson with 39 assists.

Northwestern will battle Philip in the state championship game today at 3 p.m. at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. Arlington will play for third place against Chester Area at 11 a.m. today.

Consolation

Kimball 3, Harding County 2

RAPID CITY — The Kimball Lady Kiotes (27-3 overall) downed Harding County in five games, 25-12, 28-26, 22-25, 14-25, 15-13. With the win Kimball advances to consolation championship at 9 a.m. today against Mt. Vernon.

Kimball was led in attack by Heather Spier, who had 19 kills and Andrea Taylor, who chipped in 12. Harding County was led offensively by Joey Painter, who had 16 kills.

Mt. Vernon 3, Faulkton 0

RAPID CITY — Mt. Vernon advanced to the consolation championship game by defeating Faulkton in three games 25-12, 25-20, 25-13. Number five seeded Mt. Vernon will play number six seed Kimball at 9 a.m. this morning.

The Fillies were led in attack by senior outside hitter KayLa Gerlach who had 12 kills in the win. Chandra Koch added in nine kills and six blocks.

Mt. Vernon improves to 26-2 on the season, while Faulkton drops to 19-15.

Harding County 3, Faulkton 2

RAPID CITY — After seven lead changes in the final game, Harding County’s Emily Fiest blasted a spike through the Faulkton double block to give the Ranchers a 21-20 lead. On the next point, the Faulkton hitter went long giving Harding County the win and seventh place, 25-15, 22-25, 21-25, 25-12, 22-20.

Faulkton finishes the season with a record of 19-16, and Harding County ends at 31-6.
