• Democrats surged in Tuesday’s elections, taking their firmest control of Congress since the days of the New Deal. In South Dakota, Rep. George McGovern, the Mitchell political science professor turned politician, defeated Gov. Joe Foss to win a second term in the first district congressional seat. Ralph Herseth of Houghton, another Democrat, won the gubernatorial seat.

• By a vote of 2-to-1 Tuesday, South Dakotans voted down a proposed constitutional amendment that would have lowered the voting age to 18.

25 YEARS AGO

Saturday, November 5, 1983

• Yankton police have no suspects in custody following a report that a man was assaulted and threatened with a gun at the Yankton Mall around midnight Friday.

• The Yankton Gazelles upped their season mark to 13-2 with a 74-46 triumph over Huron Friday night. Lisa Rempp tossed in 18 points for YHS.
