CROFTON, Neb. — At 5 p.m. today (Monday), as part of a worldwide pilgrimage that began in 1947, the Virgin Statue of Fatima will bring the Blessed Virgin Mary’s message of peace and hope to St. Rose of Lima Catholic parish.

In 1917, Our Lady of Fatima appeared to three little Portugal shepherd children asking them to pray in reparation for all the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary — in particular to pray the rosary. For five consecutive months, the Lady appeared to the little children.

Our Lady of Fatima brought a clear message of prayer and sacrifice for sinners to the three little shepherd children. It is said Our Lady told the little children, “War is a punishment for sin.”

The first virgin statue was sculpted in 1947 and during a Congress at Fatima, a group of young students carried it on a pilgrimage. The first miracle of the doves occurred during that pilgrimage. The Statue was sought then after for visits in other communities and received such a positive response, a second statue was carved. This statue has visited more than 100 countries worldwide. Here in the Omaha Archdiocese, it will be accompanied by two custodians of the Blue Army of Our Lady of Fatima in America.

A message of hope is carried with the Virgin Pilgrim Statue wherever it goes. The “Peace Plan From Heaven” is revealed today just as it was told to the little Portuguese children.

Our Lady of Fatima asks all Catholics for Communions of Reparation on the First Saturday of the month and that each day: we offer up each act as a sacrifice for sin; we pray the Rosary; and we be consecrated to Her Immaculate Heart and wear the brown scapular as a sign of this consecration.

Through the years, miracles have occurred at various churches along the pilgrimage. One documented event that occurs with the statue is the crying of real, human tears at some pilgrimage stops.

The last apparition called the “Miracle of the Sun,” which happened Oct. 13, 1917, will coincide with the Crofton visit.

The traveling statue came to the St. James Parish, Omaha, for the beginning of the metropolitan churches’ pilgrimage tour in the Omaha Archdiocese on Wednesday, Oct. 1. The rural pilgrimage began Friday, Oct. 10, with Holy Cross Catholic Church in Beemer. Other Catholic churches included in the rural tour include Wayne, Hartington, Fordyce, Creighton, Osmond, Dodge, Leigh and Columbus. Closing ceremonies will be Tuesday, Oct. 21, at St. Cecilia Cathedral, Omaha.

Mary Wiebelhaus of Fordyce remembers when the Virgin Pilgrim Statue was here in rural Nebraska about 20-25 years ago.

“I know my mother and I drove to Hartington to be part of a car procession when they took the statute to Menominee,” said Wiebelhaus, who also took her young, pre-school age daughter Bridget along.. “We guarded the statue on the way to the next church and showed our respect and reverence. It was a way to welcome the statue to the parish.” She added she remembered how blessed she felt to be a part of the procession.

GPS devices enable today’s custodians an easier delivery of the blessed package from church to church but many are disappointed. They feel the loss of the procession from parish to parish lessens the reverent treatment given the Virgin Pilgrim Statue.

The Virgin Statue will be met by the Catholic Daughters of America at St. Rose Church at 5 p.m. with a procession into the church and exposition of the Blessed Sacrament by the Rev. Michael Schmitz. This will be followed by a rosary prayed by the CDA. The exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will continue until the statue leaves St. Rose and heads to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Fordyce.

At 7 p.m. the same evening, the Christian Mothers will pray a rosary which will be followed by a 7:30 p.m. Mass for the CCD and FFY religious education classes of both St. Rose and St. Andrew parishes. The custodians traveling with the statue will present their testimonials and answer any questions at this service.

On Tuesday, Oct. 14, St. Rose school students and any interested visitors will walk in an afternoon procession around the St. Rose Catholic School block. The statue will be carried by four St. Rose students. The custodians will talk to the school students about their experiences at that time.

Closing ceremonies around 4 p.m. include the tentative planning of a helium balloon rosary being released by the St. Rose students before the children leave school for the day and the Pilgrim Virgin Statue leaves for Fordyce.

The arrival of the Pilgrim Virgin Statue in Fordyce in the evening of Tuesday, Oct. 14, will be at 6 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. The Christian Mothers of St. John’s parish and St. Joseph Parish in Constance will form an honor guard for the Fatima statue and parishioners will carry the statue into church. A rosary by the women’s group will follow with a mass at 7:30 p.m. and presentation by the custodians. The church will be closed at 9 p.m.

At 6:30 a.m., the Fordyce church will reopen with an 8 a.m. mass and talk for the students of West Catholic Elementary. From 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., there will be private visits and prayer. At 2 p.m., there will Benediction and closing prayers until 3 p.m.

All activities and services are open to the public and anyone is invited to take part in this very religious event for the community.
