In a back-and-forth Eastern South Dakota Conference battle with serious playoff implications, the rival Brookings Bobcats took down the Yankton Bucks 16-14 thanks to two touchdown passes from quarterback Brayden Carlson to Brett Rasmussen.

Brookings jumps to 4-3 with the win and improves its chances to host an opening round playoff game. The Bucks drop to 3-4 with the loss and will need some help if they want to host in the playoffs.

Yankton head coach Arlin Likness said the play on the field show just how similar these teams were.

“It was a good game with two evenly-matched teams and really went back-and-forth all night,” Likness said. “We just shot ourselves in the foot with silly mental mistakes and it cost us.”

The lead changed hands four times, but it was the Bobcats who were the ones to hold it last.

Yankton got the scoring going early in the first quarter. After forcing Brookings punt out of its own end zone, the Bucks took over at the Brookings 29.

On Yankton’s first play from scrimmage, Niels Anderson got the ball on a reverse and ran it in 29 yards for the touchdown. Yankton missed the extra point and led 6-0 with 9:56 left in the first quarter.

Following a 25-yard field goal by Brookings’ Matt Field, Yankton was driving with the ball in Bobcats territory. Yankton quarterback Ross Berry fumbled the snap on a botched exchange with the center and Brookings recovered at their 34.

On Brookings’ first play of the possession, Carlson connected with Rasmussen for a 66-yard touchdown pass to put the Bobcats up 10-6 with under a minute left in the first quarter.

Likness said his team has been getting into the habit of making back-to-back mistakes that result in big plays for the opposition.

“We have too many guys who give up a play and hang their heads and then turn around and give up another big play,” Likness said. “After we give up a big play we need to turn around and make a big play ourselves, like an interception. We’ve got to learn focus on the mental game and not let these negative plays remain in our heads.”

The second half began with a Yankton drive that fizzled out at midfield. Ryan Berry pinned the Bobcats inside their own 5-yard line with a good punt. Berry had four punts on the night, three of which put Brookings inside their 20.

Likness said Berry’s punting was a bright spot in the game.

“I couldn’t have asked for anything more out of Ryan,” Likness said. “He punted great. He provided most of our highlights tonight.”

After Carlson was sacked at the 6-yard line, Brookings got off a short punt to their 19.

The Bucks capitalized on the short field, scoring on a 3-yard quarterback keeper by Ross Berry. A two-point conversion put the Bucks up 14-10 with 5:16 left in the third quarter.

Brookings would respond again, as Carlson hooked up with Rasmussen for a second time in the game on a 4th-and-goal play from the Yankton 18-yard line to go up 16-14 near the end of the third quarter.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Yankton had a drive going inside Bobcat territory, but Ross Berry was sacked on fourth down to end the possession.

Brookings converted on a couple of first downs and was able to run out the clock, sealing the 16-14 win.

Ethan Schroeder led the Yankton offense with 13 carries for 65 yards and three receptions for 34 yards. Anderson finished the game with 46 yards on 11 carries.

Ross Berry went 5-15 in the game for 54 yards.

Yankton gained 144 yards rushing for a total of 198 total yards.

Ryan Guthmiller led the team defensively with 10 tackles. Jordan Schild had a strong game as well, recording six tackles and two sacks.

Mason Winterboer led the Bobcat rushing attack, as he tallied 144 yards on 26 carries. Carlson went 4-11 passing for 126 yards and two touchdowns. Rasmussen had two catches for two touchdowns and 84 yards.

The Bucks will look to regroup next week in Yankton’s final home game of the regular season against Pierre (1-6). Yankton will finish the season Oct. 23 against Mitchell (1-6).

“This next game will big for us,” Likness said. “A lot of things have to fall our way to host, but we can’t focus on that. We need to win these last two games and take care of business, along with taking care of the little things that have been causing us to shoot ourselves in the foot.”
