Yankton Library Receives Accreditation
Kathy Jacobs, director of the Yankton Community Library, and Joyce Brunken, head of the library’s circulation and interlibrary loan services, recently attended the South Dakota Library Association’s (SDLA) annual conference.
During the three-day conference, they attended sessions that addressed services and programming for libraries across the state. Several keynote speakers presented current trends and issues in libraries from both state and national perspectives.
While at the conference, Jacobs received SDLA certification as a Grade I Librarian. This certification is awarded to those who hold a Master’s degree in librarianship from a library school accredited by the American Library Association and is a requirement for cities with a population more than 10,000.
Jacobs received her master’s in Library Science and Instructional Technology from the University of Missouri Columbia in May of 2005.
The Yankton Community Library received its accreditation from SDLA, meeting 100 percent of the 49 standards set forth by this group. The standards, which deal with governance, policies, funding, administration, staffing, access, collections and resources, and public relations, encourage the ongoing development of quality library service in the state. The standards are intended to 1) provide a tool to assess the quality of library service, 2) identify areas needing improvement, and 3) aid libraries in gaining maximum community support.
