A traffic stop in Yankton early Sunday morning led to the discovery of an alleged Texas murder, local authorities reported Monday.

According to the Yankton Police Department, three juveniles were stopped by an officer at a gas station in the 800 block of Broadway around 3:30 a.m. Sunday.

“The officer wondered what a bunch of young kids were doing out at 3:30 a.m. in the morning,” Police Chief Duane Heeney said. “They were pulled into a gas station, and the gas station was not open.

“They were out of their vehicle,” he continued. “Once they saw the officer, they got back into their vehicle. The officer said they appeared nervous, and that’s when he stopped them. Here was a Texas car, and he asked them what they were here for. That’s good police work.”

The juveniles claimed they were on their way to visit grandparents in Minnesota.

However, it was determined that the driver, Paul Henton Jr., 16, was listed as a missing person out of Haslet, Texas. In addition, Jennifer Bailey, 16, and her 14-year-old brother, David Bailey, both of Roanoke, Texas, were also in the 2002 Saturn.

The names of the juveniles were reported by WFAA.com, a Dallas/Fort Worth television station. Heeney confirmed that they were correct.

After inquiring about why the juveniles were in Yankton and out past curfew, police called the Roanoke Police Department.

According to cbs11tv.com, a CBS television affiliate in Texas, police there had done a welfare check on Susan Bailey, the mother of Jennifer and David, on Sept. 26 after receiving a call from the woman’s mother. She was concerned because she had not heard from her daughter.

However, when officers visited the home, no one answered and they could find no evidence that anything was wrong.

A message left with the Roanoke Police Department Monday asking for confirmation of those events was not returned by press time.

According to Heeney, authorities in Roanoke decided to enter Bailey’s residence after receiving information about the juveniles.

“We told (Roanoke officers) they should go back and check,” he said. “They did, and (Bailey) was found deceased.”

WFAA.com reported Monday that authorities found Bailey, 43, in an upstairs bedroom hallway. She had been dead for several days, and a medical examiner told the television station that she had multiple stab wounds to her neck and signs of blunt force trauma to her head.

Police found a bat on Jennifer’s bed, WFAA.com stated.

A neighbor of the murder victim told WFAA.com that Jennifer has been dating Henton, and they had run away together in the past.

The vehicle the juveniles were driving was registered to Susan Bailey, Heeney confirmed.

The three juveniles were detained for an investigative hold in Texas and transferred to the Sioux Falls Juvenile Detention Center, he said. They have since been charged with capital murder in connection with Susan’s death.

" Jennifer & my daughter were friends all thru high school...they went to sleep overs and birthday parties at each of our homes plenty of times... I know Jennifer as a smart, but quiet girl, very nice and friendly everytime she was around. She worked at a local restaurant, and my daughter would ask me to bring her there to visit, and Jennifer would get me a free drink, and ask if she could do anything for me. She was very sweet, and I was happy that she was getting married, and my daughter was asked to be in the wedding. I guess things changed as things got bitter between her and her mom, and it was hard that they were both working to keep their home, after the divorce. I don't know everything, but I know it wasn't that it was always that bad. I can't see her doing it, but I wasn't always there to see the changes. I don't want to be naive, either - it was wrong, and it WAS possible - but none of us know all the details at this point. We are wrong to judge. I pray for Jennifer, and her brother and friend.... and I cry for her mom. It's so very sad to have come to this. "
