Wolves’ Bruckner Throws For 512 Yards In 42-36 Victory Over Irish
HARTINGTON, Neb. — Paced by 203 yards rushing, the Hartington Cedar Catholic Trojans defeated Crofton 21-7 Friday night in the opener for both teams.
Hartington quarterback Kyle Kramer threw for two touchdowns, including a 12-yard strike to Darin Hochstein in the first quarter and a 75-yard bomb to Cody Klug in the fourth quarter.
Chad Koch rushed 21 times for 122 yards for the Trojans (1-0), who led 14-7 at halftime. Koch scored on a 34-yard run in the third quarter to give the home team the lead.
Hartington Cedar Catholic faces West Point Central Catholic next Friday while Crofton is at Wisner-Pilger.

MENNO — In what may go down as one of top performances in the state this season, Menno senior quarterback Tate Bruckner threw for 512 yards and five touchdowns as the Menno Wolves held off Montrose 42-36 Friday night in Menno.
Bruckner completed 28-of-39 passes for touchdown throws of 31, 6, 23, 15 and 67 yards, while also running for a one-yard touchdown.
Menno receivers Anthony Cokens caught 10 passes for 188 yards, while Tyson Hasz had eight for 160, and Macon Oplinger had six receptions for 126 yards.
Montrose (0-1) rushed for 132 yards and got two touchdown runs from Andy Kappenmann and one from Craig Healy. David Kueter also intercepted a pass and returned it 16 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Menno next travels to Andes Central and Montrose faces Viborg in the Irish Bowl in Sioux Falls next Friday.

VERDIGRE, Neb. — Taylor Kraft threw for three touchdowns and Cole Sokol ran for two scores as the Verdigre Hawks routed Newcastle 60-6 in Friday night’s opener in Verdigre.
Kraft completed 7-of-8 passes for 178 yards for the Hawks (1-0), who led 42-6 at halftime, while Sokol carred the ball 17 times for 92 yards.
In the first quarter, Sokol ran in for a five-yard score, followed by a 34-yard touchdown pass from Kraft to Spencer Goodman, while Chip Bartos scored on a 21-yard run.
In the second quarter, Kraft hit Nathan Hrbek for a 42-yard touchdown pass, followed later by a 44-yard touchdown pass from Kraft to Goodman.
Newcastle (0-1) scored its only touchdown in the second quarter when Grant Rolfes found Dylan Whelchel for a 23-yard pass play.
Verdigre’s Russ Hirschman also added touchdown runs of 23 and 14 yards, while Hrbek added a 47-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
The Hawks, who also got three sacks from Calvin Wiese, are at Elgin next week.

ARMOUR — Despite 352 yards by South Central and down 14 points at halftime, the Tripp-Delmont/Armour Nighthawks defeated the Cougars 38-26.
TDA (1-0) got touchdown runs from Danny Baier (3 yards), Josh Nickols (8), Adam Fink (30) and Jared Hermanek (16) in the win. Quarterback Cory Fink threw for 186 yards and a touchdown and also rushed for 55 yards.
South Central’s Kaycee Martin rushed for 190 yards and three touchdowns, including scores of 9, 39, 26. The Cougars (0-1) led 20-16 at halftime but were out-scored 22-6 in the final two quarters.

Viborg 26, Baltic 6
BALTIC — Freshman Matt Jensen carried the ball 11 times for 122 yards as the Viborg Vikings defeated Baltic 26-6 Friday night in Baltic.
The Vikings also got two rushing touchdowns from quarterback Cory Jacobsen, who also completed 4-of-13 passes for 66 yards. Beau Vasakis also scored on a 3-yard touchdown run for Viborg in the first quarter.
Baltic scored its only touchdown on a 1-yard run by Zach Boldt in the first quarter. Marcus Baldwin carried the ball 23 times for 108 yards in the loss.
Viborg hosts Alcester next week and Viborg faces Montrose in Sioux Falls next Friday afternoon.

Scotland 20, Irene-Wakonda 8
SCOTLAND — The defending 9A state champion Scotland Highlanders started out the season with a 20-8 victory over the Irene-Wakonda Eagles at home.
Scotland's Jason Vaith proved to be an x-factor for the Highlanders as he scored twice and ran for 136 yards on the ground.
Vaith scored a touchdown on the opening play of the game with a 66-yard run. Vaith also added a 14-yard interception return for a touchdown in the second quarter to give the Highlanders a 12-8 advantage going into the half.
Vaith also added ten tackles. Tanner Suess had six tackles.
The Eagles struck in the second quarter but were held in check by the Highlander defense for the remainder of the game.
Eagle quarterback Justin Polley was 7-for-16 with 63 passing yards.
Irene-Wakonda plays GRegory next Friday. Scotland travels to Gregory Friday, September 19.

VERMILLION — The Vermillion Tanagers had three backs with at least 90 yards rushing on their way to a 30-7 victory against the South Sioux City in the Dakota Dome.
Andrew Eidem (129 yards), Jordan Robinson (96 yards), and Mike Oberle (94 yards) were all unstoppable for the Tanagers. They racked up 319 yards on the ground and each scored a touchdown on the night.
The Tanagers did have to fight from behind as S. Sioux City's Nick Zimmerman opened the scoring with 11:08 remaining in the second quarter as he ran home an 11-yard interception.
The Tanagers responded with 6:45 in the second quarter as Robinson scored on a 50-yard run to tie the game at 7-7.
Mike Oberle gave the Tanagers the lead for good with a 1-yard run in with 2:36 remaining in the second.
Eidem scored on a 67-yard run in the third quarter and Earl Kiertzner found Kylan Freidel for a 72-yard touchdown to give the Tanagers a 27-7 lead.
Robinson scored the last Vermillion points with a 27-yard field goal that he converted late in the third quarter.
Oberle also led the Tanager defense with nine tackles. There were three others with four tackles.
The Tanagers host Dell Rapids at the Dakota Dome next Friday. South Sioux City will host Omaha Gross on Friday.

MARION — The Marion/Hurley Cobras fell at home to Emery/Ethan 28-8 on Friday night.
Emery/Ethan score 14 points in the second quarter to give themselves a 20-8 margin over the Cobras. They allowed the Cobras only one score throughout the game thanks to stingy defensive play.
Emery/Ethan's Tyler Duba proved to be a difference maker scoring all three touchdowns for his team. Duba ran for 119 yards on 25 carries with two rushing touchdowns. He also had one reception for 35 yards and a receiving touchdown.
Emery/Ethan's Tim Olinger had 12 tackles and Duba added ten of his own.
For Marion/Hurley, Brad Tunge had a solid game with a game high 151 rushing yards on 14 attempts. He scored the lone Cobra touchdown with a 20-yard touchdown run.
M/H's Jeff Horton ran for 76 yards on 15 carries. He led the Cobras with 13 tackles.
Emery-Ethan plays Chester at Howard Wood Stadium next Friday. Marion/Hurley travels to Bridgewater to face Bridgewater/Canistota.

ALCESTER — Canistota-Bridgewater's Jimmy Olsen led his team to a 50-0 victory of the Alcester-Hudson Cubs.
Canistota-Bridgewater racked up 38 points in the first half against the Cubs defense. They scored 22 points in the second quarter alone.
Troy Hofer scored the opening touchdown with a 21-yard run. Then Olsen put his team up 16-0 with a 34-yard run. This was 1-of-2 touchdowns on the day and proved to be a spark that set the tone for the remainder of the game. Olsen ran for 122 yards on 12 attempts.
The Cubs match up against Baltic next Friday in Baltic aT 7:00 P.M.

AVON — The Avon Pirates rolled past the Andes Central Eagles with a 54-0 victory in Avon.
The Pirates jumped on the Eagles with a 36 point first quarter. They scored five touchdowns and recorded a safety in the quarter.
It took the Pirates only 1:08 to capitalize on the Eagle defense when Chris Broz scored on a 5-yard run.
The Pirates scored their next two touchdowns on the arm of quarterback Adam Oster who threw a 12-yard pass to Matt Dykstra and a 29-yard pass to Ryan Hauck.
Broz scored on a 65-yard punt return and Earv Archambeau scored on a 24-yard run to make it 36-0.
The Pirates added six points in the second, third, and fourth quarters.
Archambeau led the Pirates with 149 yards on the ground. Adam Oster threw for 69 yards with six completions, three of which were touchdowns.
Avon takes on Colome on Friday at 7:00 p.m.

LOWER BRULE — The SBA Crusaders breezed through their match up against Lower Brule on Friday night. The Crusaders scored at least seven points each quarter to win 48-0.
The Crusaders jumped to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to a 7-yard run by Cody Weiss and a 21-yard interception return for a touchdown by Preston Liebelt.
Wiess would score three touchdowns on the day including a run of 43-yards and a 1-yard score. He had 123 yards on only 15 carries.
Presto Liebelt had a 58-yard punt return for a touchdown in the third quarter. He ran for 50 yards on eight attempts.
SBA now travels to Wolsey to face Wolsey-Wessington next Friday at 7:00 p.m. Lower Brule matches up against Marty on Friday at 1:00 p.m.

ARLINGTON — The Estelline Redman rushed for 303 yards and used 16 fourth-quarter points to beat Arlington 24-22 Friday night in Arlington.
The Redman’s Jeremy Gorder ran for 193 yards and two touchdowns, including a game-tying five-yard run with 1:06 left in the fourth quarter. Estelline then converted a two-point conversion to go ahead for good.
Arlington (0-1) took a 22-16 in the fourth quarter after Christian DeKurtins scored on a 14-yard touchdown run. The Cardinals completed a two-point conversion, only to see Estelline march down the field and score themselves.
Jacob Christensen completed 6-of-11 passes for 61 yards and two touchdowns in the loss, while Elliott Harrison rushed for 60 yards.
