Lancers Beat No. 14 Dickinson State, Go 2-0 On First Day Of USF Invite
SIOUX FALLS — The Mount Marty College volleyball team scored a pair of victories, including one over a nationally-ranked program, at the University of Sioux Falls Invitational Friday.
MMC swept 14th-ranked Dickinson State 26-24, 26-24, 25-16.
Kate Carda posted nine kills and two blocks, and Krista Hohn had seven kills and four blocks to lead MMC. Abby Haiar finished with 25 set assists, five kills, two ace serves and eight digs. Anne Hanson had 10 digs and Kristi Waller added eight digs in the win.
Earlier in the day, Mount Marty beat Dakota State for the second time this season, 25-21, 25-21, 27-29, 25-20. MMC opened the season with a 3-2 win over the Lady Trojans on Aug. 23.
Haiar led the Lancers with 33 set assists, nine kills, seven digs and two ace serves. Hohn finished with eight kills and seven blocks, five solo. Krystal Cihak posted eight kills and seven digs. Defensively, Waller had 19 digs, Carly Benson had 18 digs and Hanson added 17 digs in the win.
MMC, now 4-4 on the season, plays Black Hills State at 11 a.m. and South Dakota School of Mines and Technology at 1 p.m. to finish the tournament. Both BHSU and Mines received votes in the NAIA preseason poll.
Golden Eagle Classic
CROOKSTON, Minn. — The University of South Dakota improved to 6-0 with two victories at the Golden Eagle Classic Friday in Crookston, Minn.
USD defeated Bemidji 25-21, 25-18, and 25-15. South Dakota finished the game hitting .379 and totaled 42 kills and eight team blocks.
Leading the way was Laura Slagter with 14 kills and a .417 hitting percentage. Kristin Kritenbrink was the other Coyote to register double-digit kills pounding down 11, white having a team high .455 hitting percentage. Kathleen Hruska added nine kills.
Gina Baldwin had a team high 27 set assists, while Amber Kobus and Slagter led the team with eight digs each.
Earlier in the day, USD earned a 25-22, 24-26, 25-21, 25-21 win over MSU Moorhead.
USD had four players record double digits kills as Slagter led the way with the way with 16 kills. Slagter had a team high .351 hitting percentage in the match with just three errors in 37 attempts.
Hruska had 14 kills and a .275 hitting percentage while Heather Hult (Sr., MB, Davis) and Kritenbrink each added 13 kills.
Four players also recorded double digit digs as well. Kobus led the way with 22 digs while Slager had 17 and Baldwin and Hruska added 12 and 10 respectively.
Baldwin, Slagter and Hruska all had double-doubles in the match. Baldwin had 52 set assists and 12 digs, Slagter had 16 kills and 17 digs, and Hruska had 14 kills and 10 digs.
USD finished the game with a .278 hitting percentage and seven total blocks compared to MSUM’s .253 hitting percentage and five team blocks.
USD will face Lake Superior State and Minnesota Crookston today (Saturday) at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
