Perjury Charge Dropped In Sturgis Shooting

Published: Saturday, September 6, 2008 12:52 AM CDT
STURGIS (AP) — The prosecutor in Meade County has dropped a perjury count against a Seattle detective charged with the nonfatal shooting of a Hells Angels biker at last month’s Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

Authorities say Ronald Smith shot Joseph McGuire of Imperial Beach, Calif., in a crowded bar.

They are both charged with assault and weapons violations.

State’s Attorney Jesse Sondreal says the grand jury also indicted Smith for perjury when evidence suggested he used his police-issue gun and not his own weapon.

But the prosecutor says a firearms trace shows Smith did use his personal gun.
