Volleyball: Nebraska Programs Kick Off 2008 Campaigns
NORTH SIOUX CITY — In a back-and-forth match that saw each team respond to the other, it was the Dakota Valley Panthers who came out on top, defeating Elk Point-Jefferson 26-24, 21-25, 25-22, 24-26, 20-18 in Big Sioux Conference volleyball action Thursday night in North Sioux City.
Alyssa Wall led the way for Dakota Valley (1-1) with 15 kills and three ace serves, while Nicole Dykstra recorded 31 assists. Lori Hixon added 20 digs and Kayla Spencer chipped in 12 digs and four ace serves.
For the Huskies (2-1), Maddie Pace had 16 kills and four ace serves, Molly Hammitt had five kills and Shelby Larsen added 15 assists and nine digs.

VERDIGRE, Neb. — The Creighton Lady Bulldogs cruised to a 2-0 record at the Verdigre Triangular Thursday, defeating Verdigre 25-14, 25-7 and Osmond 25-20, 25-19.
Verdigre was 0-2 in the triangular, also losing to Osmond 24-26, 22-25.
CREIGHTON 2, VERDIGRE 0: The Lady Bulldogs got 25 assists from Sarah Fanta, 10 kills from Brandi Sorenson and 13 digs from Jessica Ripp.
For Verdigre, Angela Boggs had eight assists and Brianna Hamilton had three kills.
CREIGHTON 2, OSMOND 0: Creighton got 18 assists from Fanta and eight digs from Sorenson and Amber Thomas.
OSMOND 2, VERDIGRE 0: Boggs had seven assists and two digs and Hamilton had four digs and three kills.

WYNOT, Neb. — The Wynot Lady Blue Devils volleyball team opened the 2008 season by claiming top honors in their home invitational, beating Newcastle 25-16, 25-18 in the final Thursday.
In the title match, Ashley Schmidt had six kills and three ace serves, and Sarah Schulte had four kills to lead Wynot. April Lauer had three kills and five digs. Rachel Wieseler had four digs and three ace serves, Shelby Wieseler ahd 12 set assists and Nicolette Kuchta added four digs in the win.
Wynot advanced to the final with a victory over Hartington, 26-24, 25-8.
Schulte posted four kills, five blocks and six digs to lead Wynot. Schmidt finished with three kills, two blocks and four ace serves. Shelby Wieseler had eight set assists and Lauer added three ace serves in the win.
Wynot, 2-0, hosts Allen Tuesday.
Hurley 3, Bloomfield 2
HURLEY — The Hurley Bulldogs and Bloomfield Bees went back-and-forth with Hurley coming out on top in the 25-19, 17-25, 25-22, 23-25, 15-12 five-set win Thursday night in Hurley.
Hurley, up 2-1, had a chance to win the match but Bloomfield won the fourth game, only to see the Bulldogs win the fifth and final game.
The Bulldogs (3-4) got 13 kills from Katie Buckstead, 13 assists from Tessa Buehler, 16 digs from Abby Ebbesen and four blocks from Haley Jorgensen.
Hurley will host Viborg next Tuesday.

The Chargers (2-0) got 10 kills and three blocks from Kaitlin Johnston, 22 assists from Abby Van Gorp, and 11 digs and three ace serves from Alex Brower.
Brandon Valley (1-2) were led by Jordan Peterson, who had 11 assists, nine digs, four kills and two ace serves. Lexi Maassen added eight digs and five blocks while Erica Ellis had four kills and two blocks.
The Chargers host a tournament Saturday and Brandon Valley is at Huron Saturday.

VOLGA — The Sioux Valley Cossacks moved to 3-0 on the season with a 25-21, 25-18, 25-22 win over Castlewood Thursday night in Volga.
The Cossacks got 14 digs and five ace serves from Brooke Olson, as well as nine kills and six blocks from Taylor Olson.
Castlewood (1-1) got 22 assists from Allison McEldowney and six kills and four blocks from Whitney Kemink. Kaylie Gabur added 36 digs in the loss.
Sioux Valley hosts McCook Central and Castlewood faces Flandreau next Tuesday.

LAKE PRESTON — Lake Preston moved to 2-0 on the season with a 25-21, 25-20, 25-15 straight-set victory over Dell Rapids-St. Mary Thursday night.
The Divers got 12 kills and three blocks from Lydia Nelson, and 18 assists and 13 digs from Val Williams.

BALTIC — Garretson cruised to a 25-11, 25-19, 25-15 road victory over Baltic Thursday night in Baltic.
The Blue Dragons (2-4) were led by Alyssa Wetham’s nine kills and two ace serves, while Morgan Ellefson had four ace serves and Sarah Nussbaum had two digs.
Baltic (0-3) got three kills from Alison Syverson and two kills and two blocks from Marissa Whipple.
Garretson faces Colman-Egan next Tuesday and Baltic faces Canistota next Thursday.

GREGORY — The Gregory Gorillas opened their 2008 campaign with a 25-23, 25-18, 26-24 sweep of Stanley County in prep volleyball action Thursday.
Kary Vomacka had 20 kills and 12 digs, and Tarra Kruse had 14 kills and 11 digs to lead a balanced Gregory lineup. Mindi Arizmendis had 25 set assists and 14 digs, and Carrie Hemeyer added 15 digs and five ace serves in the win.
For Stanley County, Sami Ganske posted 19 digs, Kirsten Wilcox had 11 digs and Brandi Prince added two ace serves.
Gregory hosts its annual invitational Saturday. Stanley County, 1-2, travels to Redfield Saturday.
Gregory claimed the JV and C matches, each two games to one.

Tri-Valley (2-0) got 14 ace serves and 14 assists from Chelsea Rud, as well as nine kills from Amanda Klein.
The Orioles got 10 digs from Becca Brende and two kills from Teddi Fincher.
Tri-Valley next hosts Alcester-Hudson next Tuesday.
