Pollock, Hoops Highlight Champs At RBD Bench Press Contest

Published: Thursday, August 28, 2008 11:48 PM CDT
Local power-lifters Paul Pollock and Brian Hoops were among the champions at the 5th annual Riverboat Days Bench Press Contest, held Aug. 15 at the Summit Activities Center.

A total of 31 people entered the Yankton contest, which topped the previous record of 27 entrants in 2004.

Hoops won the 200-pound division, while Pollock captured the 220 crown. It was the first year in the event for the two Summit Center lifters and both held off stiff competition from Sioux Falls to win their titles.

Hoops, of Yankton, benched 385 pounds to top the 360 mark posted by “Zee” Zielalem, Sioux Falls. Jeremy Eells, Yankton, placed third in the 200-pound group with a lift of 335, followed by Kurt Dorris, Yankton, fourth at 285.

Pollock, of Tabor, also benched 385 to win the 220-pound crown. His closest competition was Tracy Lambert, Brandon, with a lift of 355. Chris Hanzlik, Sioux Falls, took third by pressing 330. Jake Colvin, Yankton, was fourth with a lift of 315, followed by Paul Schmidt, Crofton, at 310.

Brian Hunhoff, Yankton, won the 40-49 Master’s Division with a press of 335 pounds. Mike Roesler of Irene was second and Herb Danner, Yankton, took third by pressing 300.

In the 50-59 Master’s Division, Mike Dowling, Sioux Falls, took first with a 335-pound lift. Dowling is a state champion lifter who holds four state records in the bench press. Placing second in the 50-plus division was Lee Halverson, Sioux Falls. Lester Mueller, Yankton, placed third with a bench of 310. Ken Leisinger, Sioux Falls, took fourth with an effort of 265. Leisinger also placed second in the 180-pound open division.

Dean Isburg, Volin, won the 60-69 Master’s Division for the third year in a row by pressing 250 pounds. Yankton’s John Blackburn repeated as the champion of the 70-and-over Master’s Division. His top lift was 155 pounds.

In the 12-and-under Youth Division, Tanner Frick, Yankton, won for the fourth straight year with a press of 80 pounds. Adam Heine, Yankton, was second with a lift of 75.

In the division for teens over 175 pounds, Derek Tyler, Creighton, Neb., took first with a press of 240 pounds. Austin Anderson, Yankton, was second at 205. In the division for teens under 175 pounds, Max Hunhoff, Yankton, won with a lift of 185.

Chris Moran, Sioux Falls won the 150-pound open division with a top lift of 245 pounds. Max Hunhoff was second. Preston Van Zee, Sioux Falls, took third.

In the 165-pound division, Dowling captured first place with his 335-pound effort. He was the only double-winner in the contest. Roesler was second with a 290-pound press. Chad Koch, Mission Hill, won a third place medal with a lift of 250, followed by Jason Kruse, Yankton, fourth, 235; and Jeff Neuse, Sioux Falls, fifth, 230.

Mark Shane, Sioux Falls, was the winner of the 180-pound open division. One of the best pound-for-pound bench pressers in the state, Shane lifted more than twice his bodyweight when he hoisted 365. Dowling and Hoops were just three pounds short of achieving that difficult feat.

Casey Merkwan, Gayville, was the lone entrant in the 245-pound division, but his lift of 420 pounds was the heaviest of the day. Merkwan placed second to his brother, Carson, in the 2006 contest.
